Gaussline Checks

why check gausslines?

The controlled access area around your MRI unit should fully enclose the 5 gauss (0.5mT) isomagnetic contour. If it extends outside your controlled area, you could be putting staff and patients at risk.

manufacturers' data

When your MRI unit is installed, the manufacturers will provide you with plots showing the extent of the isomagnetic contours from the static magnetic field.

There are many factors that could affect the extent of the gausslines from the theoretical plots, such as the presence of:

  • metal girders in the fabric of the building
  • nearby heavy plant machinery e.g. lifts

By making an independent check of the fringe fields, you can be sure that your controlled area fully protects patients, staff and members of the public.

MagNET's gaussline check

MagNET's gaussline check is a quick, half-day service.

MagNET's physicists will visit your site and measure the stray magnetic field strengths at key positions around your MRI unit. This includes the field strengths at:

  • key positions in the console room
  • adjacent corridors/prep rooms/plant rooms
  • outside areas (where applicable)
  • rooms above and below the scan room (where applicable)
  • all adjacent areas acessible by members of the public

This unique service is already included in our acceptance test service and we are now offering it as a stand-alone service.
