Search Tips

improve your searches...

search terms

The search terms you enter can produce large numbers of matching pages.

1. Words
If you enter individual words, the search engine will retrieve all pages containing one or more of your search words anywhere on the page.

e.g. entering:

mri manufacturers

will retrieve all pages containing the word mri or manufacturers or both.

2. Phrases
To search for an exact phrase, enclose the phrase in double quotation marks (" ").

e.g. entering:

"mri manufacturers"

will retrieve all pages containing the exact phrase mri manufacturers.

3. Wildcards
The asterisk (*) wildcard character is useful for searching for variants on a word, or if you don't remember the exact word.

The asterisk wildcard character represents zero or more characters of any type.

e.g. entering:

magnet*

will retrieve all pages containing one or more words such as:
magnet
magnets
magnet's
magnetic
magnetism

4. Include Words
You can specify in any search that certain words must all be included by preceding the word with a plus sign (+).

e.g. entering:

+siemens +magnetom +open +viva

will search for all pages containing all of the words siemens, magnetom, open and viva anywhere in the page.

Note that this differs from searching for phrases in that the words need not be immediately adjacent or in the order you specify.

5. Omit Words
You can specify in any search that certain words should not be included in the results by preceding the word with a minus sign (-).

e.g. entering:

philips -marconi

will retrieve all pages containing the word philips but not those containing the word marconi.

match

You can use the matching options to narrow down the pages returned that contain your search terms.

1. Any Word
This is the default option. Using this option will return pages containing one or more of the search terms you entered.

2. All Words
Using this option will return pages containing all of the search terms you entered anywhere on the page.

This has the same effect as including words by preceding them with a plus (+) sign.

3. Exact Phrase
Using this option will return pages containing all of the search terms you entered in the exact order and position you entered them.

This has the same effect as searching for phrases by enclosing them with in double quotation marks (" ").

4. Sound Alike Matching
Sound alike matching is turned on by default. This option will return pages containing words that sound like your search terms.

Turn this option off if you only want to find pages containing your exact search terms.

dates

You can use the date options to search for pages created on or between certain dates. This is useful for searching for new pages added to the site.

1. Within the last days/months/years
You can use this menu to select how far in the past you want the creation dates of pages to be included in the search.

2. Date Ranges
Use these menus to select a date range.

Specify the date, month and year of the start and end dates of the range.

Only pages with creation dates in this date range will be returned in the search results.

where to look

You can specify whereabouts on each page the search engine should look for your search terms.

1. Anywhere
This option searches for search terms in every part of the page.

2. Title
This option will return only pages with the search terms in the page title.

3. Description
This will return only pages with the search terms in the page description.

4. Keywords
This will return only pages with the search terms in the page keywords.

5. Body
This will return only pages with the search terms in the page body i.e. in the main page text.

6. Alternate Text
This will return only pages with the search terms in the alternate text for images on the page.

7. URL
This will return only pages with the search terms in the page URL (address).

8. Target
This will return only pages with the search terms in the target frame of links on the page.

Note that MagNET's site does not use frames and this option will not return many results.
