Philips

On the stand this year Philips was exhibiting the new 1T Panorama open and the 3T Achieva systems. Also on display were photographs of the delivery a 7T magnet in Nottingham, UK.

Panorama 1T Open System

Philips installed the first Panorama 1T open system in Las Vegas 3 weeks prior to the start of 2004's RSNA meeting. Regular delivery for the UK should be from September 2005.

Magnet

The new open magnet for the Panorama 1T is an actively shielded, superconducting magnet manufactured by IGC. Extra shimming has been incorporated into the magnet design to compensate for the openness. Philips have stated that the homogeneity over 30cm is equivalent to that of the Achieva magnet.

It has a patient horizontal gap of 1.6m and vertical gap of 42 cm from the patient table to the top pole. The magnet gap is 45cm from pole-to-pole (with the patient table out).

The outside width of the system is 2.56m and it requires a total installation area of 5 x 8m and has a mass of 7 tonnes.

The field of view for this magnet is 45 x 45 x 45cm.

The patient couch does not swing into the magnet, as with other manufacturers' designs, but has a lateral movement to enable wrists, knees and shoulders to be placed at the isocentre.

Basic monitoring connections (not ECG) have been incorporated into the end of the patient couch. A second couch will be offered with favourable pricing options to enable sites to improve their throughput.

RF System

The Panorama 1T open system incorporates 8 channel FREEWAVE RF architecture. The internal electronics are ready for 16 channels but the coils for 16 channel RF are still in development.

The available Sense coils include:

  • 4-channel Sense Head
  • 2-channel Sense Neck
  • 3-channel Sense Body/Spine
  • 2-channel Sense Flex (Large) - good for femur metastasis imaging in children
  • 3-channel Sense Wrist
  • 4-channel Sense Breast

Other coils include:

  • 2-channel Synergy Body/Spine
  • Multipurpose Flex (Medium and Large) for knees and shoulders.

Note maximum Sense reduction factor at 1T is 2.

A new feature of this Philips system is that the coil connections are now incorporated into the patient couch, removing the cables draping over the side, as with other Philips systems. The coil connections are at both the head and foot end of the bed.

Another feature to highlight is that the integrated RF body coil can both transmit and receive allowing imaging without coils on the patient.

Gradients

The gradient system has an amplitude of 26 mT/m and a slew rate of 80 mT/m/ms.

The system incorporates the Softone noise reduction system.

Applications

The Panorama 1T open system incorporates the same clinical functionality as the Achieva but without the spectroscopy option.

Whole body imaging with Mobiscan can be performed but with 7-8 steps required

Note this system is not currently aimed at interventional or radiotherapy planning sites. This is, however, a works in progress to incorporate the extra features necessary.

Achieva 3T System

Philips demonstrated the Achieva 3T with FREEWAVE on the stand. The big advantage of FREEWAVE at 3T is that it allows multi-nuclear imaging. Phosphorous imaging will be available at the end of 2005.

Philips was also demonstrating the option of the PhysioTrak monitoring system, embedded at the end of the patient couch. All connections and the display were shown at the front end of the couch.

Philips were also showing 2048 x 2048 image matrix resolution for 3T, this is works in progress.

Works in progress

A number of applications were shown as works in progress, including:

  • 3D whole heart image rendering
  • Whole body diffusion imaging as an alternative to PET for tumour location
  • T2 mapping for lesions characterisation
