MagNET performs measurements of geometric distortion as part of the technical evaluations using a phantom designed for a head RF coil.

One aspect of the research programme includes developing a method for large field of view (FOV) distortion measurements on open MRI systems.

Open systems have more significant levels of distortion than closed bore systems.

This is an important issue where the images are used for applications such as radiotherapy or surgical intervention.
